How to Maintain CNC Plasma Table

product-556-326

Ensure a clean machine

One of the best ways to keep your plasma table at good performance is to ensure that the table, torch, heads and power supply are clean. Start by taking apart the torch and inspecting the inside for signs of damage, leaks, or metal dust accumulation. Then, check for any hose kinks, cracks or exposed wires. Keep the table and surrounding workspace pristine. And finally, check the air filters on your power supply and make sure that you blow out any accumulated metal dust with compressed air - it's a huge killer of power components. Most cleaning can be done with a cotton swab and either hydrogen peroxide or electrical contact cleaner.

Run system checks

Conduct an end-to-end check of your coolant system, including filters and pump screens, and check for signs of reduced flow or aspirated air in the tank. Insufficient coolant flow can cause overheating, so make sure your gallons per minute match your manufacturer's specs. Next, make sure your cooling water is soft and free from slag and metal dust - buildup here can cause hard starts with your torch. Finally, one of the most critical checks is the quality of your plasma gas. Turn on test mode and purge air through the system, then use a clean paper towel under the torch to check for water, oil mist, or particulate contamination.

Check alignment

Your plasma table alignment is kind of like your car - once something gets out of place, the whole thing starts to shake. In this case, misalignment could cause drag. Check your rails and joints with a precision level, and file down any misalignments that you feel until they are even. Next, your gears. Make sure they are exactly aligned with the racks and that you don't feel any play between the two. Also make sure that the gear rack and pinion does not have any chipped or missing teeth. Then, adjust your bearings until there's no light between them and the rail surface, but don't over-tighten.

You'll also want to stay on top of your torch position and mount, make sure your safety trips are working, and consult your manual for other recommended maintenance for your setup.

What Is The Difference Between a Plasma Table and a Plasma Cutter?

A plasma cutter is a device that cuts through electrically conductive materials by using an accelerated jet of hot plasma directed at the material. All kinds of plasma cutter and CNC plasma cutters, says, manual plasma cutter, CNC type plasma cutters belong to the plasma cutter.

The plasma table carries this plasma cutter, which has steel CNC table apart. The table support the workpiece and control the plasma torch cutting process. So, plasma table belongs to plasma cutter.

The plasma table is suspended directly above, rides on a bridge, officially called a gantry, and moves as CAD/CAM software directs. As opposed to hand-held plasma cutters, CNC plasma cutting tables slice through metals at speeds up to 500 inches per minute, resulting in high-quality cuts in a fraction of the time.

The plasma table and power supply provide the cutting capacity and quality, while the machine's design is responsible for accurate parts. As such, a combination of a durable machine design and power source will produce the ideal results.

How to Choose CNC Plasma Table

Although there are a myriad of manufacturers and options available the basic choices should be:

Size: Get as large of a table as you can afford and fit into your shop, as you will always wish you have a larger table down the road and adding length to the machine is very inexpensive initially.

Power: Determine what you're going to cut and the percentage of that material that you will be cutting. You really don't need to buy a machine for cutting 2" plate when it's less than 5% of the work you do unless you are planning on increasing that production exponentially.

High-Definition: High-Definition in plasma is an often overused term and applications you simply do not require it. Hi definition torches, power sources and tables can triple the investment cost of your machine so before you slap down 150K+ make absolutely sure Hi-Definition is right for you. Ask for samples from standard Air-Plasma machines and you will likely find that they are more than sufficient. Remember as Hi-Definition has been advancing rapidly so has its much cheaper little brother the air-plasma. Unless you're chasing Laser Quality cuts and accuracy you're likely going overboard with Hi-Definition.

Table type: Select your table type (Heavy type, light type) based on your needs and budget.

Control: The control of the plasma table is your interface with it. It will make your job easy, or hard depending on which you choose. Try to avoid custom built PC based controllers provided from small manufacturers as they may, over time be impossible to service or upgrade.

Working Principles of CNC Plasma Tables

CNC plasma tables operate on the basic principle of plasma cutting. The process begins with the operator creating or uploading a design file into the control system software. The software then provides instructions to the table cnc system, which moves the cutting torch along the programmed path. As the torch moves, it generates an electrical arc that ionizes a stream of gas, usually compressed air or nitrogen. This ionized gas, or plasma, reaches temperatures of up to 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit, melting the metal as it passes through, while the high-velocity gas blows away the molten metal.

FAQ

Q: How accurate is a CNC plasma table?

A: Plasma will produce good results for perhaps 90% of the applications out there, but you're not going to cut watch parts with it. Plasma produces a cut edge that is as smooth as laser, but it is handicapped by a slight (4 to 5 degree) bevel in the cut face.

accurate of cnc plasma cutter

Q: Is a plasma table worth it?

A: They are successfully used in the metal cutting processes in the manufacturing, agricultural, engineering and construction industries. A CNC plasma table can change the way you cut metal, serving as the perfect addition for a small shop, a metal artist or a hobbyist and it can help save time, material and money.

Q: Can you cut wood on a plasma table?

A: No. Because the material must be electrically conductive to react to the ionized plasma gas coming from the torch, non-conductive materials cannot be processed with plasma cutting. For instance, plasma cutters cannot cut wood, glass, and plastics, or poorly conductive metals like manganese, lead, tungsten, and tin.

Q: Can you use any plasma cutter with a plasma table?

A: Unfortunately, not all plasma cutters are suitable for CNC tables. Plasma cutters that rely on a high frequency (HF) AC voltage to start the plasma stream radiate a significant amount of electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Q: Is a plasma table a CNC machine?

A: Yes, plasma table fully name is CNC plasma cutting table. Three types of CNC table machines have become increasingly popular over the last decade. These are CNC Router Tables, CNC Milling Machines, and CNC Plasma Tables.

Q: How do you keep a plasma table clean?

A: Most cleaning can be done with a cotton swab and either hydrogen peroxide or electrical contact cleaner. Conduct an end-to-end check of your coolant system, including filters and pump screens, and check for signs of reduced flow or aspirated air in the tank.

Q: Can you use antifreeze in a plasma table?

A: Ethylene or propylene glycol is the same agent used in automotive cooling systems. However automotive antifreeze should never be used in a plasma system! Most commercial antifreeze has material in it to clog small leaks. You should use those antifreeze professional for plasma.

Q: What is the green liquid in a plasma table?

A: The green liquid is GreenCut, it is a fluid for treatment of water in CNC plasma water tables. It prevents hot- spotting, corrosion, bacteria and foaming.

Q: What is the water level in a plasma table?

A: The water level typically comes up to 25-125 inches, should strictly rely on plasma supply manual.

Q: How deep should the water be on a plasma table?

A: Water or downdraft: Controlling fumes during plasma cutting
On a plasma table machine, which we'll define as any table smaller than 5 by 10 feet, the water based fume control system can consist of a simple tray or pan, about 4 to 10 inches deep that holds water.

Q: How much air does a plasma table need?

A: Output pressure is adjustable via the pressure regulator. Inlet pressures vary by system. For a small handheld plasma cutter running at 20-30 amps, you'll need as little as 4.5 bar. Larger, automated plasma cutting systems in the 130 to 400 amp range may require 5 bar or more.

Q: Why are plasma arc cutting tables often filled with water?

A: When working with a CNC plasma cutting table, it's essential to have some way of controlling the dust and fumes from the cutting process. One solution is a water table (often referred to as a waterbed or a water pan), where the metal being cut is underneath a layer of water that prevents it from generating fumes.
