Cutting machine plasma types
Plasma cutters come in a wide range of designs and capabilities, from compact handheld units to fully automated CNC systems. Each type is designed for specific applications based on material thickness, production volume, and desired precision. Understanding the main types of plasma cutters helps fabricators and manufacturers choose the right equipment for their workflow and cutting requirements.
Plasma cutting technology uses an electrically conductive gas to transfer energy from a power supply through a plasma torch to the material being cut. The resulting plasma arc melts the metal and blows it away, producing a clean, precise edge. Over the years, this technology has evolved into several main categories of plasma cutting systems, each with distinct strengths.
1. Handheld Plasma Cutters … compact and portable, these units are perfect for light fabrication, repair work, and on-site maintenance. They are typically used for cutting metal up to around 25mm thick and are ideal for workshops or mobile fabricators.
2.Mechanised Plasma Cutters … designed for integration with CNC tables, these systems are used in industrial environments where high productivity and repeatability are essential. They provide precise motion control, automated height adjustment, and compatibility with advanced software such as nesting programs.

3. High-Definition Plasma Cutter … also known as HD plasma or precision plasma, these machines use sophisticated gas control and advanced torch technology (such as Hypertherm's XPR series) to produce extremely accurate cuts with minimal bevel or dross. They are used in industries demanding fine tolerances and high-quality finishes.
4. Air Plasma cutting … air plasma uses compressed air as both the plasma and shielding gas. It's cost-effective and low maintenance, suitable for general fabrication or smaller operations.
5. Water cooling plasma cutting.. Water cooling plasma cutting is an advanced cutting technology that uses a high-temperature plasma arc combined with water cooling to achieve precise, efficient, and high-quality metal cutting. This innovative method harnesses the power of superheated plasma gas to melt through metals quickly while using a continuous flow of water to cool the cutting area and the equipment, ensuring optimal performance and extended tool life.
6.Water Mist and Dual Gas Systems … these advanced configurations use different gas combinations or water injection to enhance cut quality and reduce oxidation, especially when cutting stainless steel or aluminium.
7. Underwater plasma cutting...Underwater plasma cutting is an advanced and efficient metal cutting technology that operates beneath the surface of water. This innovative process uses a high-temperature plasma arc to melt and cut through various types of metals with precision and speed. The water environment around the cutting area helps to cool the metal and the cutting torch, reducing heat-affected zones and minimizing distortion in the material.
One of the greatest advantages of underwater plasma cutting is its ability to safely and effectively perform cutting tasks in challenging environments, such as underwater repair, shipbuilding, offshore structures, and maintenance of submerged pipelines. The water also serves as a natural filter, capturing sparks and fumes, which contributes to a cleaner and more environmentally friendly operation.
Plasma cutting continues to advance, combining high speed with excellent accuracy. Whether it's manual work or industrial-scale production, Hubei Meisar CNC provides tailored plasma systems, from compact units to fully integrated CNC solutions, engineered for performance, reliability, and long-term value.

Cutting machine MS-TP plasma CNC cut metal round pipe additional Information:
1. Do need to use gas with the MS-TP cutting machine?
Yes, since the CNC cutting is done via plasma, high-velocity ionized gas is required. The plasma arc transfers electricity from the plasma cutter torch to the workpiece, heating and melting the material. The high-speed plasma stream then drives away the molten metal, effectively cutting the material. Various gases, such as Air or oxygen, can be used for plasma cutting.
2. Is flame cutting way needed for the MS-TP cutting machine?
This depends on the thickness of your round pipes and sheet materials. Plasma cutting is highly efficient for thin materials, particularly carbon steel sheets, where it can be 5-6 times faster than oxygen cutting. It also leaves a smooth and clean surface with minimal thermal deformation and a small heat-affected zone.
However, for materials with a thickness of 6-200mm, especially above 25mm, it's recommended to use flame cutting in addition to plasma cutting.
