Several plasma working gas types, including air:
The working gas includes cutting gas and auxiliary gas. The choice of working gas is usually based on the type, thickness and cutting method of the cutting material. The most common working gases are: argon, nitrogen, oxygen, air and H35, argon-nitrogen mixture gas. The following describes the characteristics of several working gases:
- Nitrogen (N2) is a commonly used working gas, under the condition of higher power supply voltage, N2 plasma arc has better stability and higher jet energy than argon, even when cutting liquid metal viscosity materials such as stainless steel and nickel alloy, the amount of slag hanging on the lower edge of the incision is also very small. N2 can be used alone or mixed with other gases, such as N2 or air is often used as a working gas in automatic cutting, and these two gases have become standard gases for high-speed cutting carbon steel. Sometimes nitrogen is also used as an arcing gas for oxygen plasma arc cutting.
- Oxygen (O2) can improve the speed of cutting low carbon steel materials. When O2 is used for cutting, the cutting mode is similar to that of flame cutting, and the high temperature and high energy plasma arc makes the cutting speed faster, but it must be combined with the use of electrodes that are resistant to high temperature oxidation, and the anti-impact protection when the electrode is arched to extend the life of the electrode.
- The air contains N2 volume fraction of about 78%, so the use of air cutting caused by hanging slag and N2 cutting is very imaginative; The air also contains a volume fraction of about 21% O2, because of the presence of oxygen, the speed of cutting low carbon steel materials with air is also very high; Air is also the most economical working gas. However, when air cutting is used alone, there will be problems such as hanging slag and incision oxidation and nitrogen increase, and the low life of the electrode and nozzle will also affect the work efficiency and cutting cost.
- Argon (Ar) at high temperatures almost does not react with any metal, Ar plasma arc is very stable. And the nozzle and electrode used have a high service life. But the Ar plasma arc voltage is low, the enthalpy value is not high, the cutting ability is limited, and the cutting thickness is about 25% lower than that of air cutting. In addition, in the Ar protection environment, the surface tension of the molten metal is larger, which is about 30% higher than that in the N2 environment, so there will be more slag problems. Even cutting with a mixture of Ar and other gases can have sticky slag problems. Therefore, pure Ar is rarely used alone for plasma cutting today.
- Hydrogen (H2) is usually used as an auxiliary gas and other gases mixed, such as the famous gas H35 (H2 volume fraction of 35%, the rest is Ar) is one of the strongest plasma arc cutting ability of the gas, which is mainly due to H2. Because H2 can significantly increase the arc voltage, the hydrogen plasma jet has a high enthalpy value, and the cutting ability of the plasma jet is greatly improved when it is mixed with Ar. Generally, for metal materials with a thickness of more than 70mm, Ar+H2 is commonly used as a cutting gas. If the Ar+H2 plasma arc is further compressed by water jet, higher cutting efficiency can be obtained.
