WHAT THICKNESS CAN A CNC PLASMA CUTTER CUT METAL?
If you work with metal, you've likely considered using a CNC plasma cutter. These innovative tools use CNC guided plasma to cut through metals, achieving a faster and more accurate cut than other tools.
Here at Hubei Meisar CNC, we often get asked how effective CNC plasma is when it comes to cutting thick metal plate. To help you make an informed decision for your operations, we cover the maximum material thickness a CNC plasma machine can cut.
1. FIRSTLY WHAT CAN A CNC PLASMA MACHINE CUT?
With the right CNC machines, plasma will cut any material that conducts electricity. With the right settings and thickness, you should be able to cut the following metals:
- Mild steel
- Stainless steel
- Steel alloys
- Aluminium
- Carbon steel
- Copper
- Brass
Typically, 99% clients use the CNC plasma cutter to cut carbon steel, mild steel and stainless steel.
2. CUTTING THICKNESS aND PIERCE CAPACITY
The thickness of steel that a CNC plasma cutter can cut is determined by the plasma power supply.
Entry-level plasma power supply normally is 40A-100A, suitable for cutting up to 30mm (half inch).
Mid-range plasma power supply normally is 120A-200A, suitable for cutting up to 60mm thick steel.
High power plasma power supply is 300A-800A, suitable for cutting up to 90mm thick steel or more even 120mm.
Above plasma cutting thickness is edge starting.
In most CNC applications, cutting starts with piercing rather than an edge start. This means it is important to consider the pierce capacity as well as the cutting capacity. For example, the Powermax 125 will cut up to 38mm thick steel with edge-start cutting but the pierce capacity is only 25mm.
Entry-level plasma power supply normally is 40A-100A, suitable for pierce up to 15mm (half inch).
Mid-range plasma power supply normally is 120A-200A, suitable for pierce up to 25mm thick steel.
High power plasma power supply is 300A-800A, suitable for pierce up to 45mm thick steel, normally no more .
Typically, most fabrication workshops don't often need to cut materials more than 25mm to 32mm thick. Here at Hubei Meisar CNC, we have various models available starting with small 12mm plasmas up to the 400A which will comfortably cut and pierce steel up to 32mm thick with good cut quality.
3.CUTTING THICKNESS AND CNC PLASMA CUTTER RELATIONSHIP
Obviously, the thicker you want to cut, the bigger CNC plasma cutting machine you need.

Heavy gantry CNC plasma cutting machine MS-GH Structure features:
1. The beam is welded by a molded steel plate, and the beam is cut by a laser of the national standard 8mm Q235.
2. The upper and back of the beam uses a steel plate bend 90 degree arc, which can make the whole body less deformation, increase rigidity.
3. The front of the beam is welded with 22mm steel plate, and the whole surface is processed with a gantry planer to reduce the amount of deformation of the whole surface.
4. After the whole machine welding over aging de-stress treatment, followed by surface rust removal treatment.
