Difference Between Annealing And Tempering

May 18, 2020

What's the difference between annealing and tempering?

tempering

The main function of annealing is to soften the metal, strengthen the toughness, and apply to a variety of metal processing, and tempering is mainly used to reduce the brittleness after hardening of steel parts. The main purpose of tempering is to reduce or eliminate quenching stress, to ensure the corresponding tissue transformation, to stabilize the size and performance of the workpiece, to improve the heat and plasticity of the steel, to select different tempering temperatures, to obtain the hardness, strength, plasticity or toughness of the appropriate fit to meet the performance requirements of different workpieces.

    1. Steel annealing

Anneisd is a commonly used pre-heat treatment process in production. Most of the machine parts and work, mold blanks after annealing, can eliminate the cast, forging and welding parts of the internal stress and composition of the organization of unevenness; For the performance requirements are not high, not important parts and some ordinary castings, welds, annealing can be used as final heat treatment.

The annealing of steel is the heat treatment process that heats the steel to an appropriate temperature, keeps warm for a certain period of time, and then cools slowly to obtain a near-balanced tissue heat treatment process. The purpose of annealing is to homogene chemical composition, improve mechanical and process performance, eliminate or reduce internal stress, and organize preparation for the final heat treatment of parts.

There are many types of annealing processes in steel, which can be divided into two main categories according to the heating temperature: one is the annealing at a critical temperature (Ac3 or Ac1) above, also known as phase-rescocing crystallization annealing. This includes complete annealing, incomplete annealing, such as temperate annealing, spherical annealing and diffusion annealing, etc.; This includes recrystallization annealing, de-stressing and dehydrogenation. According to the cooling method can be divided into continuous cooling annealing and other temperature annealing.

    2. Steel tempering

Tempering is a heat treatment process that cools the hardened steel to room temperature in an appropriate manner after heating it to a certain temperature below Point A1 for a certain period of time. It is the next heat treatment process immediately quenched, and determines the organization and performance of steel in the state of use, which is related to the service life of the workpiece, so it is the key process.
